Christmas Decorating
Christmas decorating can be as expensive or as cheap (as in, close to free) as you like – whatever your budget says for this Christmas.
In these times of now – immediate gratification – we want our homes to look like the magazines tell us it should look. But in reality, Christmas decorating is something that is built up over years.
First, take out everything that you have in storage related to Christmas – old cards, old decorations anything that you can find. If it is not all handy, remember to keep a box or bag for storage for next year.
Lay it all out and consider your home decorating.
- Choose one or two colours and a metallic (gold or silver) that you can use. Make sure you like them, because it is best if you carry them with you from year to year.
- Choose what symbols you want displayed for Christmas – do you want the holly, mistletoe, Santa, boots, stars, reindeer, gifts, winter or something that reflects our reality – sunshine, hats, sun block, swimming, sand, shells, beach.
- Choose what room or rooms you want to decorate. It does NOT have to be the entire house! The lounge and dining? Just the lounge? Just the dining? Choose your space and stick to it. One well decorated room will look better than random decorations all over the house.
- Remember that us folk down under are in the middle of summer! We have green around us all year, and maybe our Christmas tree is the pohutakawa, so these may be our colours but make it personal for your family.
- If you have money to buy decorations, go forth and spend keeping in mind your overall colours and theme – record in your holiday budget.
- If you have very little money to spend on decorations consider the ideas for quick, easy and free (or inexpensive) ways of decorating your home in a Mums on Top article.
