How did it all begin? Since I was at school I have always loved to sketch words into unusual things. When my little nephews came along I saw that my drawings tickled children’s imaginations and challenged them to see that letters and words could really come to life. The Art Out Loud NZ adventure had begun… and now my sketchbook doodles have become a large range of personalised artwork, clothing and print designs requested by families as far away as Norway, Hong Kong and Dubai.
What’s the best thing you’ve learned in the last couple of weeks? To not be in such a hurry, stop and smell the roses… and firstly, look after yourself. You – are your most valuable resource.
What did you want to be when you grew up? A fashion designer – I loved to sketch girls inspired from those on my mother’s old sewing patterns and play with paper dolls and their outfits – including a gorgeous one of Princess Diana.
What’s your best skill outside of designing fabulous art works? Teaching – I teach part-time with Primary School aged children, and have had a wonderful time learning from children with special needs in a Conductive Education Unit this year.
What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday? This past Sunday, my partner and three year old son, put a lick of blue paint on an old piece of furniture (very exciting to see the final result). Usually I love trips to the beach, a long lavender bath and reading my son a pile of bedtime stories.
What embarrassing incident have you never gotten over? Aha – it took me awhile to remember but… when I was heavily pregnant and briskly walking down a busy street in London I was singing to myself and a fly flew straight down my throat and near choked me! I had a coughing fit and vomited it up in the middle of the footpath. It wasn’t pretty.
How do you jiggle the juggle? There are days where I still run around like a headless chicken (especially now my little one no longer naps) but I remind myself to achieve one thing at a time, tick them off my list and be thankful for what I have that makes any manic moment, worthwhile.
What does the future of Art Out Loud NZ hold? Art Out Loud NZ is carving out a journey to be a proud New Zealand brand that encourages literacy and creativity across the community. I am compelled to imagine words and names to take shape in my unique design work and will continue to build on my established artwork range in new and exciting ways aimed at encouraging children to be bold, brave and ready to explore their own unique wonderings.
