Birth Stories
Mums have an innate need to both share their stories and to listen or read about others' birth stories.Motherhood and pregnancy is a space that is latent and undisclosed.
It may begin as a secret to be held until the end of the 12th week risk, or something that is whooped about and shared immediately with friends and family. Suddenly, there are pregnant women and babies everywhere.
It becomes interesting because it is like being welcomed into a club. Suddenly women are sharing their most personal and private stories about pregnancy, birth and the post-partum period. It isn’t all pretty, but it’s there, nonetheless.
But it is those “birth stories” that become the main focus. One woman has a calm and beautiful home birth whilst another tells the trauma of being rushed for an emergency c-section.
In order to tell as story, someone needs to listen. And the drive to tell birth stories is a natural and historically important process. It’s about connection between women.
Mums on Top asked women to contribute their personal birth stories, and these are below, unedited. Please email marilynn@mumsontop.co.nz if you would like to add yours!
